This Ministry is responsible for the promotion of health education, the provision of adequate, accessible health services, as well as promotion of research in traditional medicine.

Vision
Better health conditions and significantly improved access to health facilities and services, which should enable the people of Buganda to be healthier and to enjoy a higher quality of life and improved welfare by the year 2010.

Mission Statement
To enhance promotive and preventive health services through health education, improved access to health facilities and services, as well as research in traditional and herbal medicine in order to improve the quality of and welfare for the people of Buganda.

Expected key outputs
Promotion of health education, provision of adequate, accessible health services and facilities, and promotion of research in traditional and herbal medicine and their implementation.
Provide sufficient preventive and primary health care facilities for all communities, and sufficient, timely access to curative services.

BUGANDA CEREBLATES HEALTH DAY

In an effort to improve the Health status of the people of Buganda, the Ministry of Health Buganda Kingdom organized the first ever ‘Buganda Health Day’ to be which was held on18th September, 2008 at Bulange Gardens Mengo under the theme “SANITATION AND HYGIENE IN THE HOME IS THE KEY TO HEALTH”.

The function included various activities under sub-themes of Sanitation and Hygiene, Maternal and Child Health, Nutrition, Malaria and HIV among others.

According to the Minister of Health Buganda Kingdom, Nelson Kawalya, various organizations showcased various ways of administering different dozes for different diseases especially the six killer diseases amongst children, Malaria and HIV.

The organizations also demonstrate various ways of promoting general hygiene in a home and sensitized the public about proper nutritional means for children and expecting mothers will also be provided.

Some of the organizations that showcased included, Population Service International (PSI), Mengo Hospital, Uganda Red cross, St. John’s Ambulance, DYNAPHAM International which will basically deal with Nutritional Supplements, Joint Clinical Research Centre (JCRC) on HIV, United Affected Organization on HIV and Aids, Kisubi Hospital, The Aids Support Organization Mulago and Mwana Mugimu Nutrition Unit Mulago among others.

The minister said that “the fact that the Kingdom recognizes the reproductive situation in Buganda which is evidenced by the low uptake of family planning services, high maternal mortality and other related childhood morbidity and mortality, the Kingdom intends to provide an opportunity to educate the public about various interventions available to improve reproductive health”.

The minister attributed the great improvement in the health standard of the people of Buganda to UNFPA which he said is at the fore front of promoting reproductive Health. The ministry also hopes to educate the general public about family planning methods, HIV prevention and Care strategies, the role of maternal health, the importance of safe water in disease prevention and health promotion.

NNABAGEREKA OFFICIATES AT THE BUGANDA HEALTH DAY
The Nnabagereka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda has advised people in Buganda to put more emphasis on general hygiene in their homes and bodies as one of the ways to prevent disease that result from poor hygiene.

The Nnabagereka who was closing the Buganda Health Day at Bulange Mengo first participated in Immunizing children against polio and later addressed the congregation. She sited laziness and other minor issues like poverty as some of the reasons that deter people from cleaning their surroundings which has increased the spread of diseases amongst the society.

Nnabagereka stressed that poor hygiene should be considered a crime because it’s the main cause of many diseases that have left many homes poor due to the huge hospital bill and most times the death of the bread earner. She lamented that it is so sad that grown up people have to wait to be taught how to wash their hands and when, to have a pit latrine in their homes, to clear bushes around their homes and many others.

The Katikkiro of Buganda Eng J.B. Walusimbi appealed to the people of Buganda at different levels of leadership in the villages to turn to community work of Ssagal’agalamidde as a means of reviving the laws that used to govern hygiene in the past in their respective areas. He advised people to act as watchdogs for one another in the struggle to fight poor hygiene in their areas.

The minister for Health Buganda Kingdom Nelson Kawalya, advised parents to practice family planning methods to help them bare children that they can afford to look after well. He revealed that his ministry plans to go to villages sensitizing people about general hygiene in their homes.

The state minister for Health Central Government, Emmanuel Otaala who represented the Central Government said that they are to launch a campaign to fight the number of maternal and morbidity deaths in the country.

The function was attended by ministers from Buganda Kingdom who included Lutaaya Mukomazzi, Kabuuza Mukasa, Mariam N. Mayanja, Ssimbwa Bunnya, Isreal Mayengo, speaker for Buganda Lukiiko Kaddu Sserunkuma and Managing Director CBS FM radio Godfrey Kaaya Kavuma.
