The Nnabagereka of Buganda Sylvia Nagginda has stressed the importance of cultural norms and values among people in this country.
Nnabagereka who was speaking during the closure of the 6th Ekisaakaate Kya Nnabagereka on Sunday 15th January, 2012 at St. Mary’s Secondary School said that a cultured society is likely to develop faster with improved people’s welfare.
She observed that the fact that parents enroll their children under Ekisaakaate every year is a sign that they want their children to adopt their cultural norms and values.
Nnabagereke urged parents to help the Kisaakaate trainees to put into practice what they have learnt during the two weeks of training.
She promised to look into the introduction of adults’ session of the Ekisaakaate Kya Nnabagereka but noted that many people know what to do but are simply reluctant to practice it pretending to be ignorant.
She promised to send Ekisaakaate trainers to all parts of Buganda to train Buganda’s children into the rightful cultural morals. She however explained that the board is working on preparations to set up a permanent home for Ekisaakaate in Ssisa.
The 2nd Deputy Katikkiro Hajji Ssemambo Ssekimpi in his speech during the function called upon the central government to incorporate the teaching of culture in schools’ curriculum.
He said that such an intervention would help teach children the evils of corruption so that they can grow to live without indulging in it.
He stressed that the programme should emphasize good morals similar to those children learn from Ekisaakaate which has said was way overdue.
This year’s programme ran under the theme “Culture is Critical to Development” and attracted over 400 children.
