The Catholic Church and Buganda Kingdom have today commemorated the first meeting between King Muteesa 1 and Fr. Simeon Lourdel in 1879.

The commemoration has been held under the theme “The catholic Church and Buganda Kingdom 1879-2018, “Together in the service of God’s people”

The Katikkiro of Buganda Kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga was the main speaker. Others who cited their views; Rev. Fr. Augustine Mpagi, Dr. Fred Lukabwe chairperson of the Luganda Language society.

Katikkiro Mayiga revealed how Buganda and the Catholic Church have moved together in providing service to the God’s people. He said, the Church has improved the health, and education sectors exhibited by the availability of medicine, health professionals, and good care towards the patients in the medical centers under the leadership of the Catholic Church. Schools such as, St. Henry’s College Kitovu, Kisubi boys, have groomed prominent people in this country, For example Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere, Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga just to mention but a few.

Among the notable key issues where both the Church and the Kingdom have cooperate include;

$11.      During the first coronation of Kabaka Mutebi II at Naggalabi, Ssaabasajja Kabaka chose Bishop Adrian Ddungu of Masaka diocese to lead the sermon.

$12.      In 1966 when Obote’s army invaded the Lubiri, Mengo palace to kill King Muteesa II, Muteesa went to Lubaga cathedral for rescue in order to protect his dear life.

$13.      The land at which Lubaga Cathedral is established was given out by Ssekabaka Daudi Chwa in appreciation of work done by the missionaries.

The Archbishop of Kampala diocese Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga said, that the Catholic Church is going to build a museum that will work as an archive of the history of the Church and Buganda Kingdom and it will be named after Kabaka Muteesa 1.

The event was also graced by the representative of Pope Francis in Uganda, Mmengo ministers, Christians, politicians, scholars and clergies.
