Masaza Cup opener
Gomba v Buweekula

An ingredient has been added to the Masaza Cup after Yamaha offered a brand new motorcycle for the top scorer.

The motorcycle was displayed on Thursday last week when the Katikkiro of Buganda Charles Peter Mayiga launched the Masaza Cup 2018 at Bulange Gardens in Mengo.

At the same function title sponsors of the tournament Airtel Uganda, and Centenary Bank handed the Katikkiro cheques worth sh400m and sh70m for this year’s edition. Airtel has already committed sh1.2b for three years starting with 2017.

The Katikkiro thanked the sponsors and hailed them for realizing that the market for their products was in Buganda and that they would never go wrong when they invest in the Kingdom.

“What I like of Airtel and Centenary Bank is that they know where the market is,” Mayiga said just before he launched the tournament.

“When Airtel brought money to Buganda, I since bought an airtel line, and I am now connected. And I am a Centenary Bank client because is all inclusive of all classes and status,” Mayiga explained.

The function that was attended by Masaza (county) chiefs, referees who are going to officiate at the tournament, officials of the 18 teams and the general public saw all the participating teams receive kit and balls for use.

Masaza Cup that was revived in 2004 after the restoration of cultural institutions in Uganda, is a tournament that involves all the 18 counties in the Buganda Kingdom. It ranks as one of the most popular soccer competitions in the country.

The tournament kicks off on Saturday with holders Gomba hosting Buweekula at Kabulassoke PTC ground.
