Human rights activists have requested the central government to reopen CBS radio describing its continued closure as an infringement on the rights and freedoms of expression.
In a report which was released late last week by Human Rights Network Uganda “HURNET”, it was recommended that the state should reopen CBS in the shortest time possible.
The report stated that “the State should reopen the closed radio station, restore the programmes banned and guarantee the enjoyment of basic rights and freedom of expression and the media”.
The report also holds the central government responsible for aggravating last September riots which rocked Kampala and most parts of Central Uganda.
While releasing the report, Prof Jean Barya of the faculty of law at Makerere University called upon government to release all those people who are still in jails or give them bail and end the whole saga at once.
The report further called for an independent commission of inquiry to investigate actions of all persons alleged to have perpetrated human rights abuses during the riots. |
