CONSIDER BUGANDA’S PROPOSALS IN THE CITY BILL – GORDON MWESIGYE PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 February 2010 13:59
Former Kampala town clerk, Gordon Mwesigye has advised Parliament to respect Buganda’s ideas which were forwarded during the making of the Kampala Capital City Bill.

Mwesigye who was appearing before the Public Service and Local Government’s committee in Parliament said that since the expansion will cover parts of Buganda in areas of Mpigi, Wakiso and Mukono, the Kingdom’s ideas should be give due consideration.

Mwesigye who served the city council for 27 years said that there is need to clearly demarcate the city boundaries to avoid confusion.

He advised members to rewrite the bill to overcome political interference that is likely to break out if applied in its current form.

The former town clerk added that “there is need to specify the roles of the city authorities and those of the Metropolitan Planning Authority”.

Mwesigye explained that the most important element to consider at the moment is how the neighboring areas of the city can be developed but not how big the city will become.

He also proposed that more powers should be given to the city council authorities but not the minister who will be in charge of the city and the president.
